Ron Sexsmith is a major contemporary writer/artist who has amassed a sizable and consistently enthralling body of work since making his major label debut in 1995 with his self-titled album on Interscope, followed by such eloquent musical gems as Other Songs (1997), Blue Boy (2001), Retriever (2004) and Time Being (2006). Each has its own particular character but is connected to the rest by the overarching intelligence, impeccable taste and understated emotionality of this single-minded voice in the pop-cultural wilderness. As one new fan put it in a comment on iTunes, Sexsmith’s music “wins you over with a silk punch.” Well put.
On his ninth album, the cagily titled Exit Strategy of the Soul (with an emphasis on the last word of this provocative phrase), released July 8 on Warner Music Canada, Sexsmith once again brings a provocative new wrinkle to his expansive aesthetic. Informed but not entrapped by soul and gospel music, ornamented by a Cuban horn section and his own gorgeously imperfect piano playing, the album achieves a sort of metaphysical dimension while maintaining breathtaking intimacy.

In 1994, a “legend” was born in Toronto when Bobby Bruce’s incomparable talent for impersonating Neil Diamond came to life on stage. He has never looked back. Bobby began his career with some of the biggest shows in the business including Legends of Rock and Las Vegas based Legends in Concert. In 1998, Bobby created his own show - Nearly Neil and the Solitary Band now a regular fixture at elite casinos and theatres across North America and beyond.

It is fitting that the song that launched Karl Wolf into international success was entitled “Africa.” His inventive 2008 version of the ’80s favourite by Toto became a huge worldwide hit. In Canada, it was certified a triple platinum (and #1) single, and #1 video. It was a massive hit in Japan (half a million downloads) and countless other territories, and it helped Wolf’s second solo album, Bite the Bullet, gain a release in the Middle East, Australia, Japan and Europe.
His much-anticipated third solo record, Nightlife, is out now, and it confirms the multiple talents of the Montreal-based artist and producer. Musically, it’s an accessible and highly melodic fusion of r ’n’ b, hip-hop, pop and dance music elements, a sound fitting both radio and the club dance floor. Wolf has a sweetly soulful delivery, while lyrically he digs deep in explorations of the heart.
Wolf told Tandem recently that he is especially proud of the song “My Ethnicity,” in which he pays tribute to his family’s roots in Lebanon. On the track, Karl repeats the sage advice of his father: “Don’t forget where you came from, don’t forget who you are.”
To Wolf, the song is about “making people proud, making them realize you don’t have to be a particular race to be accepted in this world. We are all beautiful, we’re all peaceful.”
Another example of his cultural pride comes in the title of Nightlife’s lead hit single, the rousing “Yalla Habibi.”
It is Arabic for “let’s go,” and Karl notes that, “it must be the first song with an Arabic title to hit the Top 40 in Canada. It makes me happy to think of Arabic kids here seeing that, and going, ‘that’s the language we use at home and it’s on radio and TV.’ It can give them hope for their future in Canada as immigrants.”
In turn, he has been eagerly embraced in the Middle East. During our interview, Wolf was phoned by the president of EMI in the Middle East, he joked that “now I can call them back. That shows how well we’re doing!” In 2008, he joined Akon and Ludacris on a star-studded lineup that launched MTV Arabia, and his clip for “Africa” was the first ever broadcast on the new station.
